Rapid Text Training
Also known as RSVP. Read text one word at a time at high speed. Builds rapid word recognition—the foundation of speed reading.
Peripheral Reading
Read words displayed in peripheral vision. Expands your visual field to capture multiple words per fixation.
Speed Reading Test
Read full passages and answer questions. Measure your real-world reading speed (WPM) and comprehension.
Schulte Table
Find numbers 1-25 in order. Classic concentration grid for peripheral vision and focus training.
📖 How to Train Speed Reading
Speed reading isn't about skimming or sacrificing comprehension—it's about training three specific cognitive skills that bottleneck your reading speed. Most people read at 200-250 words per minute (WPM), but with systematic training, 500+ WPM with full comprehension is realistic within 2-4 weeks.
The Three Skills That Matter
1. Rapid Word Recognition - Your brain's ability to instantly identify and process individual words. This is the primary bottleneck for most readers. RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) training eliminates eye movement entirely, forcing your brain to process words faster than your natural reading pace. Start at 250 WPM and gradually increase speed. Practice 5-10 minutes daily for measurable improvement in 2-4 weeks.
2. Expanded Visual Span - Skilled readers capture 2-3 words per eye fixation instead of just one. Peripheral Reading Training systematically expands your effective visual field by displaying words in your peripheral vision while you maintain central fixation. The Schulte Table is another classic tool for this—by finding numbers in sequence while keeping your eyes near the center, you train your brain to process information from your peripheral vision. Start with "near" distance and progress to "far" over 3-4 weeks of practice.
3. Efficient Eye Movement - Reducing unnecessary fixations and regressions (backward eye movements). While eye movement training is less critical than the first two skills, tracking your progress with our Full Passage Speed Test ensures your training translates to real-world reading improvement. Test yourself every 2 weeks to verify both speed gains and maintained comprehension (aim for 80%+ accuracy).
Training Protocol
Week 1-2: Focus exclusively on RSVP Training. Start at 250 WPM for 5 minutes daily, increase by 25 WPM every 2-3 sessions. Push beyond your comfort zone—discomfort indicates neural adaptation. Enable comprehension questions to ensure you're processing, not just seeing words.
Week 3-4: Add Peripheral Reading Training (3-5 minutes, 3-4x per week) while continuing RSVP. Keep eyes locked on the center fixation point—this trains parafoveal word recognition. Add Schulte Table practice for additional peripheral vision training. Combine all tools for maximum benefit, as they target different aspects of the reading system.
Week 5+: Take the Full Passage Speed Test every 2 weeks to measure real-world transfer. Most users see 60-70% transfer of RSVP gains to normal reading. If your speed increases but comprehension drops below 80%, reduce training speed and rebuild gradually.
Expected Results: With consistent daily practice (10 minutes total), most people achieve 350-450 WPM within 4 weeks and can reach 500+ WPM within 8-12 weeks while maintaining 80%+ comprehension. The key is consistent practice—speed reading is a trainable skill, not a natural talent.
