What people call “multitasking” usually involves one of several different control problems. The brain may need to switch rules, divide attention across channels, keep a secondary task running, or watch two streams for separate targets. A result from one task does not automatically predict performance on the others.
Four Skills Hidden Inside Multitasking
Dual-task cost is the change that appears when a second activity is added to something you can already do. The Multitasking Reaction Time Test measures this directly by comparing reaction time alone with reaction time while you play Brick Breaker.
Task switching is the ability to stop applying one rule and begin applying another. The Task Switch Test alternates between colour and shape judgments, allowing you to compare repeat trials with trials where the rule changes.

How to Compare Sessions Fairly
- Keep the device and controls consistent. Switching between keyboard, mouse, and touch can change response speed independently of attention.
- Practise the rules before judging the result. Early improvement often reflects becoming comfortable with the controls rather than a broad change in cognitive ability.
- Compare the pattern, not only the overall number. A strong switching result and a weaker dual-stream result describe different demands.
- Use repeat sessions under similar conditions. Fatigue, interruptions, audio volume, and screen size can all affect performance.
- Increase difficulty gradually. Accurate performance at a manageable level is more useful than making the task chaotic immediately.
These tools are short online assessments and practice tasks, not clinical measures. Their scores are most useful for comparing your own sessions and seeing which specific multitasking demand deserves more practice.
