Some people look calm in a crowded situation because they can do everything at once. More often, they are doing something subtler: deciding what deserves attention now, what can wait, and what must not be forgotten.

“Good at multitasking” sounds like one ability, much like being fast or having a good memory. It is not. A receptionist answering a caller while watching the front desk, a teacher tracking a lesson while noticing a distracted student, and a cook timing several dishes are solving different control problems.

They may need to switch rules, monitor several channels, hold unfinished goals in mind, resist irrelevant signals, and decide which demand should interrupt the others. Multitasking skill is therefore better understood as a stack of abilities than as a single mental talent.

These Skills Cooperate, but They Are Not Interchangeable

Executive functions are often described as a family of control abilities. In a landmark study, Miyake and colleagues examined shifting, updating, and inhibition. The abilities were related, but separable, and they contributed differently to more complex tasks. That “unity and diversity” is a useful model for multitasking: several control skills can work together without collapsing into one general faculty.

A later study looked directly at multitasking. Himi and colleagues tested 202 young adults on executive functions, working-memory capacity, relational integration, divided attention, and a complex multitasking scenario. Updating, inhibition, relational integration, and divided attention made strong contributions to multitasking performance. Shifting and working-memory capacity did not explain additional variance once the other constructs were considered, although the common ability shared across executive-function tasks overlapped strongly with multitasking.

That result is more interesting than a simple checklist. It suggests that the skill demanded by a multitasking situation depends on how the situation is built. A test involving several deadlines and changing information may depend heavily on updating and integrating relationships. A colour-and-shape task isolates switching more directly. A visual-and-audio task places greater weight on divided attention and response coordination.

Why a Fast Switcher May Still Be a Weak Multitasker

Suppose someone can move quickly between two rules but tends to react to every notification. Their switching speed may be good, while inhibition and prioritisation are poor. Another person may ignore distractions well but lose track of unfinished goals after each interruption. The visible problem—“bad at multitasking”—comes from a different bottleneck.

This is also why confidence is unreliable. In research by Sanbonmatsu and colleagues, people who reported more multitasking tended to show greater impulsivity and sensation seeking, and perceived multitasking ability did not provide a clean guide to actual performance. Feeling comfortable with many things happening is not the same as preserving speed and accuracy.

The safer question is not “Am I a multitasker?” It is “What happens to my performance when a second demand is added?” That turns a personality label into something observable.

Which Multitasking Skill Matters in Which Situation?

Busy office work often depends on prioritisation, working-memory updating, and clean restarts. The main challenge is rarely seeing two things at once; it is protecting the important task while lower-value requests keep arriving.

Driving, sports, and live operations place more weight on monitoring and response coordination. The person must continue a primary activity while remaining ready for an event that may require immediate action.

Teaching, healthcare, and customer-facing work mix the two. Goals, conversations, visual events, and unexpected requests all compete. Skilled performance depends partly on noticing the right interruption and partly on refusing the wrong one.

Studying with messages or media is usually less about divided attention than repeated switching. Reading and understanding require a coherent thread; every detour creates a restart and gives the competing material a chance to remain active.

How to Test the Skill Stack

No single short task can represent every real-world demand. A better approach is to compare several focused results.
