📘 Detailed Instructions

About this test: This test measures your ability to perceive melodic contour — the overall direction or "shape" of a melody as it moves up and down over time. This is a fundamental musical skill that helps with melody recognition, learning music by ear, and understanding musical structure.

Direction types:

Difficulty levels:

Important: Melodies naturally go up AND down as they progress — that's normal. Your job is to identify the overall trend, not every individual movement. Think of it like a stock chart: it might have dips and rises, but is the general direction up, down, or sideways?

Tips: Listen to the first few notes, then the last few notes. Compare them — is the ending higher, lower, or about the same as the beginning?
