Why you remember exactly where you were when the big news broke — and why that vivid certainty is less trustworthy than it feels.

Ask anyone old enough where they were when they heard about a major shocking event — an assassination, a disaster, an attack — and you'll rarely get "I don't remember." You'll get a scene: the room, the person who told them, what they were doing, how it felt.

Psychologists call these flashbulb memories. And the research on them tells a two-act story: first the discovery of how special they seem, then the discovery of how ordinary they actually are.

What a Flashbulb Memory Is

A flashbulb memory is a vivid, detailed, long-lasting memory of the moment you learned about a surprising, emotionally significant event — not the event itself, but your personal circumstances when the news arrived.

The name captures the intuition: it's as if the shock triggered a camera flash, printing the whole scene — place, people, activity, feelings — in a single indelible exposure.

Act One: The Discovery

The term was coined by Harvard psychologists Roger Brown and James Kulik in a 1977 paper in Cognition. They asked 80 American participants — 40 Black, 40 white — about their memories of hearing major news events, chiefly assassinations, along with a personally significant event like the death of someone they knew.

The Kennedy assassination stood out: about 90% of participants reported a vivid memory of the exact circumstances in which they heard, more than a decade after the fact. And personal relevance clearly mattered — 75% of Black participants had flashbulb memories of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, versus 33% of white participants.

Brown and Kulik proposed that surprise plus consequence triggered a special neural mechanism — a "Now Print!" command — that recorded the moment more permanently than ordinary memory ever could.

Act Two: The Test

The special-mechanism idea had a testable implication: flashbulb memories should stay accurate. Psychologists Ulric Neisser and Nicole Harsch got the chance to test it properly when the Challenger space shuttle exploded in January 1986.

The morning after the disaster, they had 106 students write down exactly how they'd heard the news — where they were, who told them, what they were doing. Two and a half years later, they asked 44 of those students the same questions, then compared their answers with the original accounts. The results became the famous "phantom flashbulbs" study.

Consistency was poor: scored out of 7, the average match between the original account and the later one was just under 3, and many recollections had transformed completely — a student who'd originally written that she heard the news in class now vividly remembered seeing it on TV in her dorm.

The devastating detail was confidence. Participants rated their certainty at over 4 out of 5 on average — near-total conviction in accounts that often contradicted their own handwriting from the day after. Some, shown their original responses, still preferred the new, wrong version.

What's Actually Going On

The current view sits between the two acts. Flashbulb memories are genuinely unusual in some ways — they stay vivid, emotionally charged, and confidently held for decades, where ordinary memories fade in feel as well as content.

But their accuracy behaves like any other memory: reconstructed at each retelling, vulnerable to drift, and quietly patched with plausible details from later conversations and news coverage — the same process covered in our article on the misinformation effect. Flashbulb confidence has real-world weight. "I'll never forget it" is exactly the kind of testimony that convinces juries, settles family arguments, and anchors personal histories — and the research says that phrase describes a feeling, not a verification.
