The Misinformation Effect
How a single word, question, or detail encountered after an event can quietly rewrite what you remember about it.
Imagine watching a car accident, then a friend asks, "did you see how fast that car was going when it smashed into the other one?" A week later, you're the one telling the story — and somewhere along the way, you've started remembering broken glass that was never actually there. You're not lying, and you're not confused. You're demonstrating one of the most well-documented findings in memory research: the misinformation effect.
What Is the Misinformation Effect
The misinformation effect is what happens when information encountered after an event gets absorbed into your memory of the event itself. It's a specific, well-studied case of the broader phenomenon of false memory — the difference is that the misinformation effect has a clear source: a leading question, a news report, another witness's account, or even just a conversation.
The new detail doesn't sit next to the original memory as a separate note. It merges with it, and the merged version is what gets recalled afterward, with no obvious seam showing where the real memory ends and the added detail begins.
The Car Crash That Started It All
The foundational work came from psychologist Elizabeth Loftus and her colleague John Palmer in 1974. In their first experiment, participants watched films of car accidents and were asked to estimate how fast the vehicles were going, with one word in the question changed between groups. Those asked how fast the cars were going when they "smashed" into each other gave an average estimate of about 41 mph, compared with about 34 mph for participants asked about "hit" — even though everyone had watched the exact same footage.
In a second experiment, with a different and larger group of 150 participants, people were again questioned using either "smashed" or "hit," then brought back a week later. The film contained no broken glass at all, but 32% of the "smashed" group said they'd seen some, compared with 14% of the "hit" group.
Proving the Detail Itself Can Change
A follow-up study by Loftus with Douglas Miller and Helen Burns in 1978 pushed the idea further by testing whether misinformation could replace a specific detail rather than just nudge an estimate. Participants viewed a series of slides of a car accident at an intersection, and the intersection had either a stop sign or a yield sign, depending on which version a participant saw. Afterward, some participants read a description of the accident that mentioned the wrong sign.
When later asked to pick out which sign they had actually seen, participants who'd been given the wrong sign in the description did far worse than those who hadn't — roughly 75% of participants who received accurate information picked the correct sign, a rate that dropped substantially for those exposed to the misleading version. This is the study that gave the effect its name.

Why a Few Words Can Do So Much
Part of what makes the misinformation effect so persistent is that memory doesn't clearly tag where each piece of information came from. A detail you read in a news article, a detail a friend mentioned, and a detail you actually witnessed can all end up filed under the same memory with no internal label distinguishing them.
This is closely related to what researchers call source-monitoring errors — getting the content of a memory right while getting its origin wrong. Once information is folded into a memory this way, retrieving the memory retrieves the blend, not the original and the addition as two separate things.
Why This Still Matters
The misinformation effect became influential specifically because of its implications for eyewitness testimony. A leading question during a police interview, a detail mentioned by another witness before an official statement, or media coverage consumed before testifying can all shift what a witness reports — not because anyone is being dishonest, but because that's how memory retrieval works.
The same mechanism plays out well outside the courtroom too: it's part of why rumors and secondhand retellings tend to pick up specific, confident-sounding details that weren't in the original account, and it shares the same reconstructive root as the Mandela Effect, just triggered by a specific piece of information rather than a vague cultural assumption.
A Detail Doesn't Have to Feel Foreign to Be Wrong
The misinformation effect isn't a special vulnerability some people have and others don't — it shows up reliably across ordinary people with nothing unusual about their memory. What it argues for isn't distrust of your own memory in general, but some caution about how much weight to put on a detail you can't clearly trace back to the original moment.
