2. Spatial Awareness: Building a Map You Can't See

Inside a smoke-filled structure, vision is often near zero. Firefighters navigate by constructing a 3D mental model of the building from fragments — the floor plan glimpsed on entry, the wall followed by touch, the sounds, the count of doorways — and that model is what leads them back out. Search patterns, hose-line management, and crew coordination all depend on everyone holding roughly the same mental map.

3. Judgment Under Pressure: Deciding Without Deliberating

Perhaps the most famous study of real-world decision-making ever conducted was done on firefighters. Klein, Calderwood, and Clinton-Cirocco (1986) interviewed 26 veteran fire ground commanders — averaging 23 years of experience — about 156 critical decision points from real incidents. The startling finding: in fewer than 12% of those decisions was there any evidence of comparing options at all. Experienced commanders recognized the situation as a familiar pattern and acted on the first workable course of action — a style the researchers named recognition-primed decision making.
