How to play
- Pick a game mode, difficulty, and your color, then press Start Game.
- Black moves first in this version. Only the dark squares are used.
- With Legal Move Hints on, your movable pieces carry a gold outline. Select one, and legal destinations show a teal dot while jump landings show a red dot.
- Click or tap a highlighted square to move there. Click the selected piece again to deselect it.
- Your own pieces are always shown at the bottom of the board, so the view flips when you play Black against the computer.
Rules used in this game (American checkers)
- Regular pieces move one square diagonally forward into an empty square.
- You capture by jumping straight over an adjacent enemy piece into the empty square beyond it. The jumped piece is removed.
- If a further jump is available from the landing square with the same piece, the jump chain continues on the same turn. The piece stays selected until the chain is finished.
- With Forced Captures on, a capture must be played whenever one is available. With it off, you may choose a normal move instead. Once a capture begins, any available continuation jumps with that piece must still be completed.
- Reaching the far row crowns the piece a king, shown with a crown symbol. Kings move and capture one square diagonally in either direction. This game uses short kings, not long-range flying kings.
- Crowning ends the turn immediately, even in the middle of a jump chain.
- You win by capturing all enemy pieces, or by leaving your opponent with no legal move.
- The game is drawn if each side makes 40 moves with no capture and no uncrowned man advancing toward the king row. A position repeated three times with the same side to move is also a draw.
Settings
- Game Mode: Vs Computer for a solo game, or 2 Players to pass one device back and forth.
- Computer Difficulty: Easy is beginner-friendly and makes frequent strategic mistakes, Medium looks a short distance ahead but still plays imperfectly, and Hard searches deeply and punishes loose play.
- Your Color: Black moves first. Choose Red to let the computer open.
- Forced Captures: On matches standard play by requiring a capture whenever one is available. Off lets you choose a normal move instead, but if you start a capture, any available continuation jumps must still be completed.
- Legal Move Hints: Show outlines and destination markers for legal moves, or hide them for a cleaner board and a harder read.
Undo, keyboard access, and ending a game
- Undo Turn takes back your whole last turn, including a full jump chain. Against the computer it also takes back the computer's reply, so you return to your own turn.
- New Game immediately starts a fresh board with the current settings. The discarded position is not added to Recent Games.
- Keyboard users can Tab through the currently playable pieces and destinations and press Enter or Space to select them.
- The clock pauses when you switch away from the tab or browser window, so a game left open does not inflate your time.
- End Game abandons the current game. Abandoned games are not saved to your history.
Strategy tips
- Keep your back row intact early. It denies the opponent easy crowning squares.
- Advance pieces in connected pairs so a jump against you can be answered by a jump back.
- Control the center. Pieces on the side files have half the mobility and are easy to trap.
- Count exchanges before you offer one. A two-for-one trade that opens a crowning lane is usually worth it.
- Once you are ahead in material, trade pieces off. Simplifying favors the player who is up.
