Attention Is a Filter, Not a Spotlight You Fully Control

Attention works by suppressing competing information, not just by amplifying what you want to see. That's why the Stroop Effect is so hard to resist — reading a word is so automatic that your brain processes it whether you want it to or not, and it interferes with the simpler job of naming a color. The Cocktail Party Effect shows the flip side of the same filter: your brain keeps low-level tabs on everything you've tuned out, which is why hearing your own name from an "ignored" conversation can snap your attention there instantly.

What You're Not Focused On Can Vanish Entirely

Vision feels complete and continuous, but you only process a small slice of a scene in real detail at any moment. When that slice doesn't include the thing that changed, change blindness and inattentional blindness take over — a large, obvious difference or object can sit in plain sight and never register. Attentional capture is the built-in override for this gap: certain signals, like sudden motion or a loud noise, are wired to grab focus automatically, precisely because the rest of the system misses so much by default.

Attention Has a Refresh Rate

Locking onto one target briefly uses up the resources needed to notice the next one. The Attentional Blink is the clearest demonstration — after correctly spotting a first target in a rapid stream, a second target appearing roughly half a second later is very likely to be missed entirely, even though it was just as visible. Sustained attention runs on a slower version of the same limit: focus that starts sharp reliably degrades the longer a task continues, which is why vigilance tasks get harder well before they feel boring.

Nearby Information Competes Even When It Shouldn't

Attention doesn't isolate a target as cleanly as it feels like it does — nearby items still get processed and can either help or hurt a response. The Flanker Effect shows the cost directly: responses get slower and less accurate when the items surrounding a target point the wrong way, even when you're told to ignore them completely. Divided attention and visual search sit on the same spectrum — splitting focus across two streams or scanning through clutter both draw on a limited pool of attentional resources that competing information eats into.
