Practical Intelligence vs IQ
A high IQ can help you solve unfamiliar problems quickly. Practical intelligence shows up when the problem has missing information, awkward people, competing priorities, and no answer key.
Imagine two new managers facing the same employee problem. One spots every logical inconsistency in the situation immediately. The other knows which issue has to be handled first, which person needs a private conversation, and which “obvious” solution will create three new problems by Friday.
Both forms of thinking matter. They simply emphasize different things. IQ summarizes performance across standardized cognitive tasks such as reasoning, knowledge, memory, and processing. Practical intelligence describes the ability to use what you know effectively in real situations, especially when the rules are incomplete and success depends on context.
What Is Practical Intelligence?
Psychologist Robert Sternberg developed one of the best-known scientific accounts of practical intelligence. The concept is closely tied to tacit knowledge: knowledge about how to get things done that people often acquire through experience without being formally taught.
That can mean knowing when a technically correct answer will fail politically, recognizing which detail in a messy situation actually matters, or understanding an unwritten workplace rule that nobody included in the handbook. Jennifer Hedlund’s overview of practical intelligence describes this kind of knowledge as highly contextual and often learned through experience.
This is why practical intelligence overlaps so naturally with what people call street smarts. The everyday label is loose; the research tradition tries to turn part of that intuition into something measurable.
How Is That Different From IQ?
IQ testing asks how well you perform on carefully designed cognitive tasks compared with other people in your age group. The goal is standardization: everyone sees comparable problems, the scoring rules are fixed, and the test tries to minimize irrelevant differences in context. Practical problems are almost the reverse. The context is part of the problem. You may have to work out what the real goal is, which information can be trusted, how another person is likely to react, or whether the best textbook solution is even feasible.
That distinction does not make IQ irrelevant outside testing. General cognitive ability predicts meaningful real-world outcomes, including job performance. A large reanalysis of the General Aptitude Test Battery found that general mental ability predicted occupational performance criteria across hundreds of samples, with stronger relationships in more cognitively complex work.
The useful question is therefore how much practical knowledge adds once general cognitive ability is already known.
Can Practical Intelligence Predict Real Performance?
Research on tacit knowledge suggests that it sometimes can. Sternberg and colleagues studied practical knowledge in domains ranging from management and military leadership to everyday adaptation. The basic method is often situational: present a realistic problem, offer several possible responses, and compare the person’s judgments with expert patterns or other performance criteria.
That approach has obvious similarities to a situational judgment test. Meta-analytic research by McDaniel and colleagues found that situational judgment tests showed useful criterion-related validity and also correlated meaningfully with general cognitive ability. In practice, judgment tests can capture a blend of knowledge, reasoning, personality, and familiarity with the domain.

A Striking Example: Knowledge That Works in One Environment
One of Sternberg’s most memorable practical-intelligence studies took place in rural western Kenya. Researchers assessed children’s tacit knowledge about natural herbal medicines used locally and compared it with measures of academic intelligence and achievement.
In that 2001 study, practical knowledge about the medicines showed trivial or negative relationships with several academic measures. The result illustrates the context-dependence at the heart of practical intelligence: a child can acquire sophisticated knowledge that is highly useful in one environment and largely invisible to a school-style cognitive test.
It does not follow that practical knowledge and IQ are generally opposites. The study shows that environments reward different kinds of learned knowledge, and a standardized test cannot sample every useful thing a person has learned to do.
Is Practical Intelligence Mostly Experience?
Experience is central, although experience alone does not guarantee expertise. Two people can spend ten years in the same job and learn very different lessons from it.
The difference may partly come from what they notice and how they reflect on outcomes. Matthew and Sternberg tested this idea in two experiments involving U.S. Army officers and college students. A guided reflection exercise improved tacit-knowledge scores in the officer sample, with a similar effect that approached significance in the student sample.
That result fits a practical idea: experience creates raw material; reflection helps turn it into usable rules. The manager who keeps asking, “What clue did I miss last time?” has a better chance of building useful judgment than someone who simply repeats the same year ten times.
Practical Intelligence Is Broader Than Decision Speed
Good practical judgment can look fast because experts recognize familiar patterns quickly. Speed itself is not the goal. Sometimes the practical move is to delay a decision, gather one more piece of information, or notice that the question has been framed badly.

Can Someone Have High IQ and Low Practical Intelligence?
Yes, as an everyday description. A person can reason extremely well on structured problems and still lack experience in a specific social, occupational, or cultural environment. The reverse pattern can also appear: someone with ordinary standardized test performance may develop excellent judgment in a domain they know deeply.
The key word is domain. Practical intelligence is especially sensitive to where and how the knowledge was learned. A superb emergency-room nurse, restaurant manager, mechanic, and trial lawyer may each possess rich tacit knowledge that transfers poorly to the others’ worlds.

Where the IQ-Style Test Fits

The Difference That Matters
IQ asks how effectively you solve standardized cognitive problems. Practical intelligence asks how effectively you use knowledge in a particular world.
The two can support each other. Strong reasoning can help you learn a complex environment faster; deep experience can give you shortcuts and context that a newcomer lacks. Real competence often comes from the meeting point between the two.
