Can Memory Exercises Prevent Memory Loss?
Memory exercises clearly make people better at some memory tasks. The harder question is whether those gains protect the mind years later, when the original game has been forgotten.
Crosswords, number games, memory apps, card matching, language learning, and mental puzzles are often described as ways to “keep the brain young.” There is truth inside that claim, but it is easy to stretch it too far.
Cognitive training can improve the skill being practised, and some benefits can last for years. Evidence that ordinary memory exercises prevent broad age-related decline or dementia is much less certain. One unusually long study has produced an encouraging result, but it involved a specific form of processing-speed training rather than memory exercises generally.
A useful first step is to separate three different questions:
- Can practice improve memory-test performance?
- Can it help with similar tasks in everyday life?
- Can it reduce the risk of cognitive decline or dementia?
The evidence becomes less certain as you move down that list.

Memory Exercises Improve What You Practise
The most reliable finding in cognitive-training research is also the least dramatic: people improve at the task they repeatedly perform.
Practise digit span, and you are likely to remember longer digit sequences. Practise visual patterns, and you become better at recalling similar visual patterns. Practise locating targets quickly on a busy screen, and your speed on that kind of search can improve.
These gains are real. The important limitation is transfer. Improvement often spreads to closely related tasks, but it does not automatically produce a general upgrade to memory, intelligence, or every part of daily thinking.
A systematic review of longer cognitive-training trials found moderate-strength evidence that healthy older adults improved in the cognitive domain they trained. The reviewers found insufficient evidence that training prevented or delayed dementia.

Improvement Is Not the Same as Prevention
Suppose someone practises recalling word lists and improves from eight words to twelve. That demonstrates learning. It does not by itself show that the training slowed biological brain aging or reduced the person’s likelihood of developing dementia.
Dementia can involve changes in brain tissue, blood vessels, metabolism, inflammation, and other systems that a short memory exercise may not affect. A task can strengthen a particular cognitive process without altering the underlying causes of disease.
This does not make the exercise useless. Staying mentally active can be enjoyable, challenging, and helpful for maintaining practised skills. It simply means the claim should match the evidence.
What the ACTIVE Trial Found
The largest long-running cognitive-training project in this area is the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly study, usually called ACTIVE.
The original trial included 2,802 adults aged 65 and older. Participants were assigned to one of three training programmes or to a control group:
- memory strategies;
- reasoning exercises;
- visual processing-speed training;
- no cognitive-training programme.
At the ten-year follow-up, reasoning and processing-speed training still produced improvements in their targeted abilities. Memory training showed a smaller and less durable pattern.
The study was important because it showed that a relatively brief intervention could leave measurable effects many years later. It still did not establish that ordinary memory exercises prevented dementia.
The Encouraging 20-Year Finding
A newer analysis linked ACTIVE participants to Medicare records for as long as 20 years. The result was more striking.
Participants assigned to processing-speed training who also completed at least one set of booster sessions had a lower rate of diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The reported hazard ratio was 0.75, corresponding to a 25% lower relative rate of diagnosis during follow-up.
However, the 2026 ACTIVE analysis also found:
- no lower risk among speed-trained participants who received no booster training;
- no main dementia-risk reduction from the memory-training programme;
- no main reduction from the reasoning-training programme.
This distinction matters. The finding does not show that memory puzzles, crosswords, or general brain games prevent dementia. It points to one adaptive, speeded, divided-attention programme as a promising candidate that now needs further confirmation.
The diagnoses also came from medical claims rather than repeated specialist assessments performed specifically for the study. The result is meaningful, but it should not be treated as the final word.
Why Processing-Speed Training May Be Different
The successful ACTIVE task did more than ask participants to memorize information. It required them to identify visual information quickly while handling distractions and increasingly demanding displays.
That engages processing speed, visual attention, and divided attention together. These abilities are important for everyday activities such as driving, scanning an environment, and responding to changing information.

What About Crosswords, Sudoku, Reading, and Games?
People who frequently read, play games, learn skills, or take part in mentally demanding activities often show better cognitive outcomes in observational studies.
The problem is that mentally active people may differ in many other ways. They may have more education, stronger social networks, better health, higher income, or greater access to care. Those factors can also influence dementia risk.
Observational associations therefore cannot prove that the activity itself caused the lower risk. Randomized trials are needed to separate the exercise from the people who choose to do it.
The practical conclusion is not to abandon enjoyable mental activities. It is to avoid treating one favourite puzzle as a guaranteed protective shield.
A Broader Approach Makes More Sense
The World Health Organization’s updated dementia risk-reduction guidelines describe prevention as a broader public-health challenge. The recommendations cover healthy behaviours, management of health conditions, environmental risks, and tailored multidomain interventions.
That broader approach fits the nature of dementia better than expecting one memory game to carry the whole burden. Cognitive health is connected to physical activity, cardiovascular health, sleep, hearing, social engagement, education, and other factors alongside mental stimulation.
Memory exercises can be one part of an active life. They should not replace medical care, physical activity, social contact, or treatment of health problems.
How to Use Memory Exercises Realistically
Train the skill you actually use. Practise verbal recall if you want to remember spoken information. Use visual or spatial tasks if those are the abilities you want to challenge.
Keep the difficulty adaptive. A task should become harder as you improve. Repeating an exercise that has become effortless provides little new challenge.
Use several kinds of activity. The Memory and Recall section includes verbal, numerical, visual, spatial, and working-memory exercises rather than treating memory as one skill.
Do not interpret practice gains as diagnosis. Scores naturally improve as you learn a task’s rules and strategies. That does not prove that biological aging has reversed.
Pay attention to real-life function. Remembering one more digit is encouraging, but also notice whether you are following instructions, managing appointments, navigating familiar places, and handling everyday tasks reliably.
When Memory Changes Need More Than Exercise
Occasional slips are common. A persistent change that interferes with familiar tasks deserves a different response than simply playing more memory games.
Examples include repeatedly getting lost in familiar places, difficulty managing routine finances, frequently forgetting recent conversations, or a noticeable decline observed by other people. So, Can Memory Exercises Prevent Memory Loss?
Memory exercises can improve trained abilities and some closely related skills. Those gains can be meaningful and, in some studies, long-lasting.
Evidence that memory exercises generally prevent age-related decline or dementia remains insufficient. The strongest recent long-term result came from a specific processing-speed programme with booster sessions, not from the memory-training arm of the same trial.
The most reasonable approach is to use memory exercises for what they clearly provide: challenge, practice, measurable skill improvement, and an enjoyable way to stay mentally engaged. Treat dementia prevention as a much broader project involving physical health, mental activity, social connection, and appropriate medical care.
