What Is Episodic Memory? Definition & Examples
Ask someone with severe amnesia to describe a place they have never visited, and something unexpected happens to their imagination.
In 2007, a team at University College London tried a question nobody had formally asked. Amnesia's effect on the past was well established. What about imagination?
They gave five patients with bilateral hippocampal damage some ordinary prompts — imagine lying on a white sandy beach, imagine standing in a museum — and asked them to describe the scene. Not to recall anything. Just to picture something that had never happened.
The patients produced markedly impoverished descriptions compared with matched controls, and the researchers traced the shortfall to something specific: their imagined scenes lacked spatial coherence. Isolated fragments arrived — a sound, an object — but no setting held them together. No place to be inside.
Nobody had asked them about their past. The damage that erased their history had taken their beaches too.
Overlapping Machinery, Two Directions
Episodic memory is usually defined as memory for personally experienced events — the branch of explicit long-term memory that stores what happened, where, and when. That definition is correct and slightly misleading, because it makes the system sound like a filing cabinet for things that already occurred.
The imagination finding suggests something else. Remembering an event and constructing an imagined one appear to draw on overlapping constructive processes, with the hippocampus contributing to both — in particular to the spatial framework that holds a scene together. Point that construction backwards and it supports memory. Point it forwards and it supports planning.
That broader link to future simulation is an implication of work like this rather than something the 2007 study set out to test, and the two are not identical: researchers describe meaningful differences between recollecting an episode and projecting one. Endel Tulving, who named episodic memory, called the wider capacity mental time travel. It's the reason an archive is the wrong metaphor. An archive only faces one way.
What Makes a Memory Episodic
Three things arrive bound together: what happened, where it happened, and when. Strip the where and the when and you're left with a bare fact.
Which is precisely the border with semantic memory. You know Rome is the capital of Italy without any accompanying scene; the fact arrived at some point and shed its origins. You remember a particular dinner in Rome as a situated moment you can re-enter.
Tulving described the difference as remembering versus knowing. Semantic memory delivers information. Episodic memory delivers information plus the sense that this happened to you — a distinctive kind of awareness that accompanies the content rather than being part of it. Built, Not Played Back
If remembering is construction rather than retrieval, one consequence follows immediately: a memory can be assembled confidently and still be wrong. Not corrupted — just built, the way it always is, from fragments plus expectation.
The cleanest test of that involves the memories people are most certain about.
On 12 September 2001, Jennifer Talarico and David Rubin asked 54 Duke students to record how they had heard about the previous day's attacks, and also to record an ordinary recent event. They retested them 1, 6, or 32 weeks later.
Consistency fell for both kinds of memory, at rates that did not differ between them. The September 11 accounts drifted like everything else.
Confidence behaved differently. Ratings of vividness, of recollection, and of belief in the memory's accuracy declined for the everyday events — and stayed high for the flashbulb ones. The dramatic memories were no more consistent over time. They only felt more dependable, and that confidence stayed high while the accounts quietly changed.
The study tracked how far each account drifted from the person's own first report, not against an objective record of the day, so it speaks to consistency rather than measured accuracy. But that gap between felt certainty and actual consistency isn't a defect specific to traumatic events. It's a structural feature of a system that rebuilds rather than replays. Why This System Carries More Than Nostalgia
Because remembering and imagining overlap, episodic memory is quietly load-bearing for things that look nothing like memory.
Rehearsing a difficult conversation before having it. Planning a trip. Weighing whether you'd actually enjoy the job. Which is why episodic decline in ageing, and its early vulnerability in Alzheimer's, costs more than access to the past. Losing the ability to reconstruct a scene appears to erode the ability to project one — one system failing, two capacities going with it.
Stitched together across a lifetime, individual episodes also become autobiographical memory, the running account that makes you a continuous person rather than a series of disconnected moments.
Can You Test It?
Not completely, though the field gets closer than you might expect. Clinicians and researchers assess episodic memory with delayed recall, story recall, associative learning, and tasks that ask people to report what appeared, where, and in what order. What no scored task can read off from the outside is the private part — the sense of having been there.

The Short Version
Episodic remembering and future imagination draw on overlapping constructive machinery. Build a scene you were once inside and you call it remembering; build one you've never entered and you call it imagining. Both are constructions, which is what makes them rich, flexible, and unreliable in the same breath.
