Source-Monitoring Errors
Why you can remember a fact, a joke, or an idea perfectly clearly, and still get the source of it completely wrong.
You tell a friend a great story, only to have them reply, "you told me that exact story last month." Or you're certain you read a statistic in a news article, but you actually heard it secondhand from a coworker who got some of the details wrong. In both cases, the memory itself isn't broken — you remember the story, you remember the statistic. What's broken is the tag attached to it: where it came from, and how you know it.
What Counts as a Source-Monitoring Error
A source-monitoring error is different from most of the memory distortions covered elsewhere in this guide. With false memory or the misinformation effect, the content of the memory itself is wrong — you remember something that didn't happen, or a detail that was never there.
With a source-monitoring error, the content can be entirely accurate. What's misattributed is the origin: whether you read something or were told it, whether you actually did something or only imagined doing it, or whether an idea was originally yours or someone else's.
Why Memory Doesn't Come With a Label
The influential framework behind this, developed by psychologist Marcia Johnson and colleagues in 1993, makes a simple but important point: memories aren't stored with a stamp on them saying where they came from. There's no field in your brain labeled "source." Instead, the brain infers the source after the fact, based on the characteristics of the memory itself.
Memories of things you actually perceived tend to carry more sensory detail — colors, sounds, spatial layout. Memories of things you only thought about or imagined tend to carry more traces of the mental effort involved in generating them. Under normal conditions, those differences are enough to sort real from imagined, and self from other. When the differences get subtle — because time has passed, attention was divided, or the imagined version was especially vivid — the sorting process can misfire.
A Real Demonstration: Cryptomnesia
One of the clearest experimental demonstrations of source-monitoring failure is cryptomnesia — unconsciously reproducing someone else's idea, word, or contribution while believing it's your own. In a well-known 1989 study, psychologists Alan Brown and Dana Murphy had small groups of participants take turns generating examples of a category, like types of clothing or sports, with instructions not to repeat anything already said by someone else in the group.
Afterward, participants were asked to recall only the items they themselves had generated, and separately to come up with new items nobody in the group had said yet. On the first task, 75% of participants ended up claiming at least one item that had actually been generated by someone else. On the second task, 70% did the same, offering as "new" an item another participant had already said earlier in the session.
In nearly all cases, people weren't stealing credit on purpose — they had simply lost track of who had said what.

Where This Shows Up in Everyday Life
Cryptomnesia isn't just a lab curiosity. It's part of why brainstorming sessions sometimes produce disputes over whose idea something was, and why writers and musicians occasionally get accused of unintentional plagiarism for material they genuinely believed they'd invented from scratch — the most famous legal example being the 1976 case establishing that George Harrison had unconsciously copied a melody he'd heard years earlier while writing "My Sweet Lord."
Outside of anything that dramatic, the same mechanism shows up any time you can't quite remember whether you actually said something out loud or only rehearsed it in your head, or whether a "fact" you're about to repeat came from something you read or something you overheard secondhand.
Right Memory, Wrong Source
Source-monitoring errors are a reminder that accuracy and origin are two separate questions, and memory can answer one correctly while getting the other wrong. Before repeating something as fact, or crediting yourself with an idea that feels entirely your own, it's worth pausing on where it actually came from — not because your memory of the content is untrustworthy, but because the label attached to it might be.
