What is a Vocabulary Size Test?
This test estimates how many English word families you know. A word family includes a base word and its common forms (e.g., "run", "runs", "running", "ran").
Two-Phase Testing:
- Phase 1 (Calibration): You'll see words from across all difficulty levels. This helps estimate your approximate vocabulary level.
- Phase 2 (Detailed): Based on Phase 1, you'll see more words focused around your estimated level for a precise measurement.
Response Options:
- Know It: You can define or use this word correctly
- Seen It, Unsure: You've encountered it but aren't confident about the meaning
- Don't Know: You've never seen this word or have no idea what it means
Why Honesty Matters:
Fake words (non-words that look real) are mixed in. If you claim to know too many fake words, your score will be adjusted down. Be honest for accurate results!
Understanding Your Score:
- Native speakers: Median is ~15,000 word families. 20,000+ is above average.
- Non-native speakers: 10,000+ is advanced. 15,000+ is near-native level.
