Stanford-Binet IQ Test: Scores, Ranges & How It Works
The Stanford-Binet gives one IQ score that most people recognize. Underneath it are ten subtests, five cognitive factors, and two parallel routes through the test: verbal and nonverbal.
The Stanford-Binet is one of the oldest names in intelligence testing, though the current test looks very different from the early “mental age” scales many people associate with Binet. Today’s version is the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition, usually shortened to SB5.
Riverside Insights lists the SB5 for examinees from age 2 through 85+. It is an individually administered professional assessment. Its unusual strength is breadth across age and across response format: the same five broad abilities are sampled through both verbal and nonverbal tasks.
That makes it a useful counterpart to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, which reaches a broad IQ estimate through a different battery structure.
What Does the Stanford-Binet Measure?
The SB5 organizes intelligence around five factors: Fluid Reasoning, Knowledge, Quantitative Reasoning, Visual-Spatial Processing, and Working Memory.
Fluid Reasoning asks how well you can solve unfamiliar problems and detect relationships. Knowledge reflects information and concepts acquired through experience and education. Quantitative Reasoning focuses on numerical relationships and mathematical problem solving. Visual-Spatial Processing deals with patterns, spatial relationships, and mentally organizing visual information. Working Memory measures how well information can be kept active while you use it.
Each factor has a verbal and a nonverbal side. That means the test can ask whether a similar broad ability appears when language demands are higher or lower.
How Is the Stanford-Binet Scored?
The modern Stanford-Binet uses deviation IQ scoring. The Full Scale IQ has a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. In plain English, 100 sits at the center of the norm group; moving roughly 15 points in either direction represents one standard deviation.
The test also produces a Verbal IQ, a Nonverbal IQ, and factor scores for the five abilities above. So an SB5 report can show both the overall level and the pattern underneath it.

Stanford-Binet IQ Score Ranges
The SB5’s score bands are centered on 100. The descriptive labels below follow the traditional Stanford-Binet classification language used for the fifth edition. Labels become increasingly clinical at the lower end. They are test-report terminology; the score by itself does not establish a diagnosis.

The table above shows the conventional 40–160 classification range. SB5 extended scoring can reach farther in both directions, including 25–39 and 10–24 at the lower end and 161–175 and 176–225 at the upper end.
The boundaries look sharp on paper, though measurement is never perfectly sharp. A score of 109 and a score of 110 are almost identical statistically even though they fall on opposite sides of a descriptive label. What Do Scores Like 100, 115, and 130 Mean?
Because the SB5 uses a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, a few landmarks are easy to remember. A score of 100 sits at the center of the distribution. A score of 115 is about one standard deviation above the mean, roughly around the 84th percentile. A score of 130 is about two standard deviations above the mean, close to the 98th percentile. The same spacing works downward: 85 is about one standard deviation below 100, and 70 is about two.
Those percentiles are often more intuitive than the labels. “High average” can sound vague; “around the 84th percentile” tells you that the score is higher than roughly 84 percent of the norm group. Professional reports also include confidence intervals because an observed score is an estimate, not a perfectly exact point.
Does the Stanford-Binet Still Use “Mental Age”?
The Stanford-Binet’s history makes this confusing. Early intelligence tests were associated with the idea of mental age, and older ratio-IQ formulas compared mental age with chronological age. Modern SB5 scoring does not work that way.
Today, performance is compared with age-based normative data and converted into deviation IQ scores centered on 100. That matters because a modern IQ of 120 does not mean that a 10-year-old has the mind of a 12-year-old. It means the child’s standardized performance falls well above the average for the relevant age group. The same scoring logic allows the SB5 to be used across a very wide age range without turning adult intelligence into an increasingly awkward “mental age” calculation.
Why Does the SB5 Have Both Verbal and Nonverbal IQ?
The verbal/nonverbal split is one of the Stanford-Binet’s most distinctive features. A person can approach fluid reasoning through a task with little language, then encounter another fluid-reasoning task with stronger verbal demands. The same broad idea applies across the other factors.
That does not make the nonverbal score “culture free.” Visual experience, education, test familiarity, and other background factors can still matter. It does give examiners another way to examine how language demands interact with performance.

Does the Five-Factor Structure Hold Up in Research?
The SB5 was designed around five factors across verbal and nonverbal domains. Independent researchers have questioned how distinctly those five factors appear in the data.
DiStefano and Dombrowski analyzed the 4,800 cases in the SB5 standardization sample. Their results found clearer verbal/nonverbal dimensions among younger children, while older age groups were more strongly dominated by a single general factor.
That fits a broader theme in intelligence testing: specific abilities matter, while a strong general intelligence factor often runs through the whole battery.
Some Subscores Still Capture Something Specific
A strong general factor does not mean every subtest is interchangeable. Pomplun and Custer examined the SB5’s verbal and nonverbal working-memory measures. The two forms showed different relationships with other memory measures and with reading and mathematics skills, supporting meaningful distinctions in what those tasks were capturing.

What If the Stanford-Binet Profile Is Very Uneven?
This is where score interpretation gets interesting. People often assume that a large gap among subtests makes the FSIQ meaningless. Recent evidence gives a more complicated answer.
A 2026 study examined 5,352 clinically referred people ages 2–22 and compared SB5 measurement in groups with high versus low subtest scatter. The authors found only limited impact of scatter on the construct validity of IQ and reported additional support for the robustness of FSIQ even when subtest scores were uneven.
That does not make the profile irrelevant. It means an uneven profile does not automatically erase the usefulness of the overall score. The total and the pattern can answer different questions.
How Is the Stanford-Binet Different From the WAIS?
Both are professionally administered intelligence batteries with standardized IQ scores. Their architecture differs. The SB5 spans ages 2 to 85+, uses five factors with paired verbal and nonverbal measurement, and produces Verbal IQ and Nonverbal IQ alongside FSIQ. The adult WAIS-5 uses its own subtests and index structure for ages 16 through 90 years, 11 months.
Neither battery is simply a longer version of an online IQ test. The examiner follows standardized administration rules and interprets the scores in the context of the referral question, testing behavior, and other relevant information. The broader comparison is covered in Types of IQ Tests.
Where an Online IQ-Style Test Fits

The Number Is Only the First Layer
A Stanford-Binet FSIQ tells you where broad performance sits relative to the norm group. The richer part of the assessment is how that result was built: five factors, verbal and nonverbal routes, individual subtests, and the pattern across them.
That is why a score like 100, 120, or 130 is useful without being the whole story. The number gives the location. The profile shows some of the terrain.
