What Is Prospective Memory? Definition & Examples
You never forgot what milk was. You just weren't thinking about it at 6:15, and that turns out to be a completely different kind of failure.
At three in the afternoon, at your desk, you know perfectly well that you need to stop for milk on the way home. You could pass a quiz on it.
At 6:15 you drive past the shop.
At seven you're standing in front of the fridge, wondering how you managed to forget something you knew all day.
The Content Was Never the Problem
You didn't. Not in the usual sense.
Prospective memory is memory for intentions: forming a plan, carrying it through a delay filled with entirely different business, and retrieving it when the intended time or event arrives — often while your attention is occupied elsewhere. Researchers call it "remembering to remember."
Every other system in this series faces backwards. Episodic and semantic memory store what happened and what you learned. Prospective memory faces the other way, and its content is usually trivial to hold. Nobody forgets what milk is. The hard part is entirely timing: the intention has to lie dormant while you work and talk and drive, then interrupt you inside a window that may last thirty seconds.
This is why it accounts for so many everyday memory complaints. Missed appointments, unreplied messages, the pan left on the heat, the medication not taken. Those often aren't things people failed to store. They are intentions whose cue was absent, overlooked, or not strong enough to bring them back at the right moment.
The Study That Found Nothing, Usefully
Gilles Einstein and Mark McDaniel built the standard laboratory method for this in 1990, by burying an intention inside a busy task: participants worked through demanding memory tests and, in addition, had to remember to press a key whenever a particular target word appeared.
They expected older adults to struggle. If ageing mainly disrupts self-initiated retrieval, and prospective memory is self-initiated retrieval in its purest form, the decline should have been dramatic.
Both experiments found no age differences in prospective memory — despite reliable age differences on the retrospective memory tests running alongside them. The expected deficit didn't appear.
Two details from that work matter more than the headline. External aids and distinctive target events improved performance. And when participants who missed the target were asked afterwards what went wrong, they reported that they remembered perfectly well what they were supposed to do. They simply hadn't thought of it.
That's the whole subject in one sentence. Prospective failure isn't a failure of what's stored. It's a failure of something to fetch it.
Two Kinds of Intention
Event-based intentions are hooked to something in the world: give Sam the message when you see him, take the pan off when the timer rings, buy milk when you pass the shop. The environment carries part of the load. If the cue is noticed, it can pull the intention up with relatively little effort.
Time-based intentions have no hook: call at four, leave in twenty minutes, take the tablet at eight. Nothing out there will volunteer the reminder, so you have to monitor the clock and yourself — self-initiated retrieval, the most effortful kind, competing for the same working memory your actual work is using.
Which points at the standing advice: convert them. "Call at four" becomes "call when the four o'clock reminder appears" — a time-based task wearing an event-based task's clothes.
Where Intentions Go
Failures cluster in conditions you can name in advance.
Absorption. When the ongoing task is demanding, the capacity that would have noticed the cue is spent elsewhere — the deep-focus afternoon that swallows the four o'clock call whole.
Habit capture. Routines run on procedural memory, and a strong routine will carry you along its usual track straight past a one-off detour. The commute drives you home, milkless, while you think about something else.
Interruption. Being pulled away mid-task is a notorious intention-killer, because resuming requires the interrupted intention to resurface unprompted — the same problem in miniature.
And an unexecuted intention isn't quiet in the meantime. Open loops have a way of intruding at every moment except the one where acting is possible, a pattern related to the Zeigarnik effect and catalogued alongside its relatives in the memory phenomena guide.
Making Intentions Fire
If the failure is one of cueing, the fix is to build a cue rather than to try harder.
The best-evidenced version is the if-then plan, which researchers call an implementation intention. Instead of "I need to reply to Dana," you specify the when, where and how in advance: "when I sit down after lunch, I will reply to Dana." A meta-analysis by Peter Gollwitzer and Paschal Sheeran, drawing on 94 independent tests, found a medium-to-large effect on goal attainment. Welding an action to a concrete situation converts a vague intention into an event-based one, and the situation then does the remembering.
The second fix is offloading, without embarrassment. Alarms, pillboxes, a note on the door, the bag placed against it. Einstein and McDaniel's own finding that external aids improved performance is the laboratory version of what organised people worked out long ago: put the intention into the world, where the cue can't be missed, and save the unaided heroics for situations that permit nothing else.

Can You Test It?
Testing prospective memory requires embedding an intention inside another activity. Participants are told to perform an action when a later time or event occurs, then work through an ongoing task during the delay. What the test measures is whether the intention returns when its cue arrives — not whether the instruction was kept secret.
That structure is perfectly buildable; it just needs an ongoing task absorbing enough to occupy attention while the intention waits. Cognitive Train doesn't currently have one.

The Short Version
Prospective memory is the forward-facing half of remembering: intentions that are easy to store, hard to surface, and judged entirely on timing. Its failures aren't character flaws or evidence of a bad memory — they're the predictable result of asking a cue-driven system to fire without a cue, against absorption, habit and interruption.
So stop trying to remember better. Convert time-based intentions into event-based ones, weld plans to concrete situations, and offload freely. The goal isn't a perfect memory. It's a set of cues good enough that your memory rarely has to be.
