The Primacy Effect

Why the first thing you learn about someone shapes everything you think about them afterward, even when later information contradicts it.

You meet someone new, and within the first minute or two, you've already formed a sense of who they are. Everything they say and do for the rest of the conversation tends to get folded into that early impression rather than replacing it.

This isn't just a saying about first impressions mattering. It's a specific, well-documented pattern in how memory and judgment work, called the primacy effect.

What the Primacy Effect Actually Is

The primacy effect is the tendency for information encountered early in a sequence to have a disproportionate influence on your overall judgment or memory, compared to information that comes later. It's one half of the serial-position effect — the other half being the recency effect, which favors whatever came most recently.

What makes primacy distinct is that it isn't just about remembering the first item better. It actually changes how later information gets interpreted, bending it to fit the impression that was already forming — a kind of momentum that makes contradictory information later on feel like the exception rather than a reason to revise the whole picture.

The Classic Demonstration

The foundational research on this came from psychologist Solomon Asch in 1946. Asch read participants a list of adjectives describing a hypothetical person and asked them to form an impression. The list itself stayed the same, but the order of the words was reversed between groups.

Participants who heard positive traits first and negative ones later formed a notably more favorable overall impression than participants who heard the exact same traits in the opposite order. The identical information, presented in a different sequence, produced a different person in the listener's mind.

Confirmed With "Jim": The Luchins Studies

A few years later, psychologist Abraham Luchins pushed the idea further with a simpler and more memorable design. Participants read two short paragraphs about a fictional person named Jim — one describing him acting like an extrovert, the other describing him acting like an introvert — with the order switched between groups.

Whichever version came first dominated the final impression, even though participants had read both descriptions in full. Interestingly, when Luchins introduced a time gap between the two paragraphs, the effect sometimes reversed into a recency effect instead — participants partly forgot the earlier description and weighted the more recent one more heavily. The order effect was consistent; which direction it ran in depended on how fresh the first information still was by the time judgment happened.

Where This Shows Up Beyond the Lab

Job interviewers often form a strong sense of a candidate within the first few minutes, then spend the rest of the interview unconsciously looking for evidence that confirms it. Sales pitches, first dates, and classroom introductions all carry the same asymmetry — whatever lands first sets the frame that everything afterward gets measured against.

It's also part of why negotiators are often advised to open with their strongest point rather than saving it, and why the opening minutes of a presentation tend to matter more than presenters usually assume. Resumes and portfolios carry the same bias: whatever sample or credential sits at the top tends to color how a reviewer reads everything that follows it, even when the later items are objectively stronger.

What This Adds Up To

The primacy effect means the order you present information in isn't a neutral choice — it actively shapes how that information gets judged, independent of its actual content or accuracy.

That cuts both ways: it's worth knowing when you're the one presenting something, and worth being a little suspicious of your own snap judgments of other people, since the trait that happened to register first may be carrying more weight than it deserves.
