A reminder works best when it appears at the moment you can act on it. Writing “return package” on a list may not help if you forget to check the list before leaving. Placing the package directly in front of the door creates a cue that is difficult to miss.
Use the same idea elsewhere:
- Put an item that must leave with you beside your shoes or bag.
- Place a note on the object involved, not on a distant desk.
- Set a location-based reminder for something that must happen at a particular place.
- Move an unusual object into your path as a temporary signal.

2. Turn a Vague Intention Into an If-Then Plan

When performing an action you often doubt later, briefly describe it: “I locked the door,” or “I turned off the stove.”
This adds a verbal event to an otherwise automatic movement. Instead of relying only on a familiar action that resembles hundreds of previous occasions, you create a more distinctive moment that is easier to recall.
Keep this selective. Narrating every ordinary action would become distracting. Use it for the few actions that regularly make you stop and wonder whether you completed them.
5. Group Lists Before Trying to Remember Them
A shopping list containing apples, detergent, milk, toothpaste, bananas, cheese, and soap is easier to handle when reorganized into produce, dairy, and household items.
This is memory chunking: several separate items are reorganized into a smaller number of meaningful units. The categories also provide retrieval cues. If you remember that the list had three dairy products, realizing that you have recalled only two signals that something is missing.

7. Retrieve Information Before Looking It Up
Before reopening a message, checking a calendar, or searching for an answer, pause and try to recall it. Even a brief attempt helps distinguish actual memory from mere familiarity.
This is the everyday version of active recall. You might use it by:
- recalling the three errands before checking your list;
- summarizing instructions before rereading them;
- trying to remember a person’s name before opening your contacts;
- reconstructing tomorrow’s schedule before checking the calendar.
External tools remain useful. The retrieval attempt simply gives the memory a chance to become more accessible before the answer appears.
8. Use External Reminders Deliberately
Writing things down is not cheating. It is cognitive offloading: moving some of the burden from internal memory into the environment.
