Can You Increase Your IQ? How Real Change Differs From a Higher Test Score

A higher IQ score can come from genuine cognitive change, education, development, or simply becoming better at the test. The number can move. What moved underneath it is the interesting part.

Yes, IQ scores can increase. There is also good evidence that some experiences—most convincingly, education—can produce genuine gains in the cognitive abilities IQ tests measure.

The tricky part is that “my IQ went up” can describe several different events. You might have improved broad cognitive ability. You might have strengthened one skill. You might simply recognize the test format faster the second time. All three can raise a score, and they do not mean the same thing.

First, Separate the Score From the Ability

An IQ score is an estimate based on your performance on a sample of cognitive tasks. It is designed to tell us something about abilities such as reasoning, working memory, processing speed, verbal knowledge, and the broader pattern often called general intelligence, or g.

That makes the score useful, but it also means the number can change for more than one reason. If you sleep badly before one test and arrive rested for the next, your score may rise. If you spend years in education and improve across several cognitive domains, your score may rise for a much deeper reason.

A higher score alone cannot tell you which kind of change happened.

Education Gives Us the Strongest Evidence That IQ Can Rise

Education is especially informative because researchers can study situations where extra schooling was caused by policy changes instead of simply comparing people who voluntarily stayed in school longer.

A major meta-analysis by Stuart Ritchie and Elliot Tucker-Drob combined 42 data sets, 142 effect sizes, and more than 600,000 participants. Across several quasi-experimental research designs, one additional year of education was associated with roughly 1 to 5 extra IQ points. The effects appeared across broad categories of cognitive ability and across the life span.

One of the clearest individual examples comes from Norway. A reform increased compulsory schooling from seven to nine years. Using the reform as a natural experiment, researchers estimated that an extra year of schooling raised IQ by about 3.7 points among the young men studied.

That does not give us a recipe for adding exactly 3.7 points to anyone’s IQ. It does show something important: measured intelligence is capable of responding to sustained environmental experience.

IQ Can Also Shift During Development

Children and teenagers are still developing rapidly, so an early IQ score should never be imagined as a permanent ceiling. Our guide to how IQ changes with age follows that question across the lifespan.

In a longitudinal brain-imaging study of 33 teenagers, verbal and nonverbal IQ scores rose or fell over several years. Changes in the scores were associated with changes in local gray matter in brain regions linked to the relevant tasks.

The study was small, so it does not tell us how much change to expect in a typical teenager. Its value is more basic: relative cognitive standing can move during adolescence, and some of those changes were linked with measurable brain development.

Practice Can Raise IQ Scores Without Raising Intelligence

This is where the question gets slippery.

In one WAIS-IV study, 54 young adults took the same intelligence battery again after three or six months. Their Full Scale IQ increased by about seven points on average. The researchers attributed the gains to practice effects from previous exposure.

Seven points is large enough to sound like a meaningful change in intelligence. In this case, the better explanation was familiarity with the test: participants knew the style of the tasks, had less novelty to process, and could approach the second session more efficiently.

Getting Better at One Brain Task Is Easier Than Raising Broad Intelligence

Practice usually works very well for the thing you practice. The harder question is whether the improvement spreads to tasks that look different.

Working-memory training provides a good example. A meta-analysis covering 87 publications and 145 experimental comparisons found reliable improvements on working-memory measures closely related to the training. When researchers looked for far transfer to broader measures such as nonverbal and verbal ability, they found no convincing evidence of reliable improvement against treated control groups.

That distinction is central to the entire “increase your IQ” debate. Becoming excellent at an N-Back task is a real performance gain. Showing that the gain generalizes across unfamiliar reasoning, memory, and verbal tasks is a much higher bar.

What Would Count as a Real Increase in Intelligence?

A convincing change should survive a few tests of its own. Ideally, improvement appears on tasks you did not practice directly, lasts beyond the immediate training period, and shows up across more than one measure of the underlying ability.

That is why a five-point jump after repeating the same matrix test is weak evidence by itself. A sustained improvement across several independently designed cognitive measures is much more interesting.

This also connects to fluid and crystallized intelligence. Vocabulary and accumulated knowledge can grow through learning for many years. Broad gains in novel reasoning are harder to produce through short, targeted training.

Can Adults Increase Their IQ?

Adults are not cognitively frozen. Education studies include evidence extending beyond childhood, and adults can clearly learn new knowledge, strategies, and skills. The harder claim is that a short intervention can reliably lift broad general intelligence by a large amount.

Current evidence gives much more confidence to long-term learning and education than to quick “IQ boosting” programs. That is also why the next practical question—what activities are actually worth doing?—needs to separate strong evidence from attractive promises.

So, Can You Increase Your IQ?

Yes. IQ scores are changeable, and some genuine cognitive changes can move them. Education provides especially strong evidence that sustained experience can raise measured intelligence. Development can shift cognitive standing too.

At the same time, a higher score is not proof that general intelligence increased. Practice effects and narrow skill gains can move the number as well. The most useful question is therefore one step deeper: what changed, how broadly did it transfer, and did it last?
