What is flash word recognition?
Flash word recognition tests your brain's ability to process written words under severe time constraints. Words are displayed for just milliseconds, challenging your visual system to extract letter patterns before they disappear. This measures the speed and efficiency of your early visual word processing, independent of higher-level comprehension.
How to use this test:
Select your flash duration (shorter = more challenging)
Choose how many trials you want to complete
Click START SESSION to begin
A fixation point (+) will appear - keep your eyes focused on it
A word will flash briefly where the + was
A mask (####) will appear to prevent afterimages
Four similar words will appear as choices
Click the word you saw
You'll see immediate feedback showing whether you were correct
Why the masking?
The #### symbols that appear after the word serve an important purpose: they prevent your visual system from continuing to process the afterimage. Without masking, you could "cheat" by using the lingering visual trace. The mask forces you to extract the word identity during the brief presentation, making this a true test of rapid visual processing.
Difficulty levels explained:
Flash Duration:
200ms (Slow): Enough time to comfortably read most words
150ms (Medium): Challenging but achievable with focused attention
