The Frequency Illusion

Learn a word, buy a car, hear an obscure name — and suddenly it's everywhere. The world didn't change; your attention did.

You learn a new word on Monday. By Friday you've met it in a podcast, a headline, and a stranger's conversation, and the coincidence feels almost pointed — as if the word were following you. Or you finally choose a car, and the road is instantly full of that exact model, in that exact color.

Nothing became more common. What changed is the filter. The frequency illusion is the experience of a newly noticed thing appearing to surge in frequency, when in reality it was always there — passing through your perception unflagged, day after day, until the moment you started caring.

Two Names, One Trick

The phenomenon carries a strange double identity. Its informal nickname, the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, traces to a 1994 reader letter to the St. Paul Pioneer Press: the writer had heard of the Baader-Meinhof group — a German militant organization — for the first time, then encountered it again within a day, and asked whether others knew the experience. Readers flooded in with their own examples, and the accidental name stuck.

The proper term arrived in 2005, when Stanford linguist Arnold Zwicky named it the frequency illusion while cataloguing the perceptual traps language-watchers fall into — people convinced a "new" expression was suddenly everywhere, when corpus data showed it had been in steady use for decades. In Zwicky's analysis, the illusion is built from two stacked components: selective attention, which flags every instance of the newly learned thing, and confirmation bias, which logs each hit as evidence of a trend while ignoring the ocean of moments containing no sighting at all.

The Fine Print

The engine underneath is simply how attention works. Perception is not a camera; it's a search party with a list. Out of the torrent of input reaching your senses, only items matching current priorities get promoted to awareness — the rest is processed shallowly and dropped. The famous flip side is inattentional blindness: in Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris's 1999 experiment, about half of viewers counting basketball passes failed to notice a person in a gorilla suit strolling through the scene. Unprimed, you miss a gorilla; primed, you can't miss a Corolla.

Learning something new edits the search list. The new word, car, song, or symptom gets tagged as relevant, and your attention starts flagging matches it previously discarded. Each flagged match then arrives with a jolt of salience — again! — while the thousands of unflagged non-matches generate no experience at all. You're running a tally with one column.

Where the Illusion Bites

Mostly it's harmless, even charming — a private wink from the universe. But the same machinery misfires in consequential places. Medical trainees who just studied a rare condition famously start seeing candidate cases of it on the ward, a recognized hazard of diagnostic reasoning. Investors who learn a new market narrative find confirming signals in every chart. And the illusion is a load-bearing wall of conspiracy thinking: once a theory installs its filter, ordinary coincidences arrive pre-highlighted, each one feeling like independent confirmation.

Modern feeds pour fuel on it. Retargeted ads and recommendation algorithms ensure that the thing you noticed once genuinely does appear more often afterward — a real frequency increase stacked on top of the perceptual one, making "it's everywhere" partly true and wholly convincing.

The illusion runs on the same confirmation-bias circuitry as its cousins — it's what makes vague horoscope statements feel personal in the Barnum effect, and it sits in the same family of reasoning traps mapped across our cognitive biases section. What You Can Do With It

The one-question test defuses most cases: "Was it always there?" Before concluding that something is trending, spiking, or following you, ask what you would have noticed a month ago, before you cared. If the honest answer is "nothing," you've found a filter change, not a world change. For claims that matter, the upgrade is counting: base rates, search-volume data, or a simple tally beat felt frequency every time, because felt frequency is recording hits in one column and discarding the misses.

The illusion exists because recognition — the feeling of I've seen this before — is fast, automatic, and persuasive, but it is a judgment your brain renders, not a fact it retrieves. The frequency illusion is a receipt for how much of "reality" is actually attention.
