State-Dependent Memory
Why what's happening inside you when you learn something — your mood, alertness, chemical state — becomes part of the memory itself.

Your internal condition at the moment of learning — mood, arousal, fatigue, even the chemical state of your body — is encoded along with the material. Return to a similar state, and retrieval gets easier. Shift states, and a memory that's fully intact can become harder to reach.
The Classic Study
The best-known demonstration is a 1969 study by Donald Goodwin and colleagues, published in Science. Forty-eight male medical students learned material in one of two states — sober, or under the influence of alcohol — and returned the next day to be tested, either in the same state or the opposite one.
That created four groups: sober both days, intoxicated both days, and the two mismatched combinations. On recall tasks, the mismatched groups made more errors than the matched ones — including the group that learned intoxicated and was tested sober, who did worse than those tested in the same state they'd learned in.
To be clear about what this doesn't mean: alcohol impaired learning overall, and the researchers noted its negative effects on taking in information in the first place, over and above any state-matching effect. The finding isn't that an altered state helps memory — it's that whatever state you encode in becomes part of the retrieval conditions.
The Detail Most Summaries Leave Out
Goodwin's study contained a second finding that gets skipped in most retellings: the state-matching effect showed up on recall tasks, but on the recognition task — picking previously seen pictures out of a set — changing states made no significant difference.
That fits a broader pattern in this research. State-dependent effects appear mainly when you have to generate the memory yourself, with your internal state as one of the few available cues. Hand someone a strong external cue — the item itself, in recognition — and the internal state stops mattering much.

Does It Work with Moods Too?
The mood version — remembering better when your emotional state at recall matches your state at learning — is the most intuitively appealing form of the idea, and also the most fragile in the lab.
Memory researcher Eric Eich spent years pinning down when it actually shows up, summarized in a 1995 review in Psychological Science. His conclusion: mood-dependent memory is real but far from guaranteed. It appears most reliably when the moods involved are strong and stable rather than mild, when the material was generated by your own thinking rather than absorbed from outside, and when the memory test is free recall rather than recognition.
In other words, the same theme again: the weaker the external cues and the stronger the internal state, the more that state ends up mattering.
What It Looks Like in Ordinary Life
A mild everyday version is why things learned when you're sharp and alert can feel oddly distant when you're exhausted, and vice versa — your level of arousal was part of the encoding.
It also offers one piece of practical advice that costs nothing: when something important needs to be recalled under pressure — an exam, a presentation, an interview — practicing in a state resembling the real one (alert, slightly keyed up, upright) gives the material one more matching cue at retrieval time. Calm midnight review sessions don't perfectly rehearse a 9 a.m. adrenaline state. A pressured task like the N-Back Test is one way to practice recall while genuinely keyed up.

The Core of It
State-dependent memory says your internal condition can become one of the cues linked to a memory when it is formed, and it quietly becomes one of the keys that can later unlock it. When strong external cues are available, the state hardly matters; when you're generating a memory from scratch, it can matter a lot.
The effect is real, bounded, and most visible exactly where the research keeps finding it: free recall, strong states, weak outside cues.
